First Aid for Rural Medical Emergencies (F.A.R.M.E.)

The First Aid for Rural Medical Emergencies (F.A.R.M.E.) training manual addresses basic steps in accessing emergency medical services, stabilizing the scene of accidents, delivering first aid, and considering risk factors for preventing injury or illness among farm and rural residents.  The manual is designed for use by instructors of first aid who wish to target their instruction towards individuals and family members engaged in farm and farm-related activities.

This manual has been used for several train-the-trainer programs with high school students engaged in agricultural activities. In fall 2005, an elective N213 has been added to the School of Nursing curriculum using the manual and a companion CD. The CD was developed using Flash software and incorporates video, quizzes, text, web resources, and trivia facts. The CD is used by students to interactively cover the theory portion of the course. Following successful demonstration of first aid skills, students will work with community partners to provide first aid training.
